Book presentation during LANDforum 2016

05-02-2016 On Thursday 4 February, at LANDforum 2016 in Utrecht, a copy of ‘Cooperatives, economic democratization and rural development’ was presented to Theo de Jager, Chairman of the Pan African Farmers’ Organisation (PAFO).

Published on 29 January, this book, edited by Jos Bijman (Wageningen University), Roldan Muradian (Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil) and Jur Schuurman (formerly of Agriterra), is about the role played by cooperatives in rural developments and the alleviation of poverty.

For a wider audience, the volume outlines all aspects of a cooperative, the importance of cooperatives for farmers and the role of cooperatives in the supply chain. On the basis of a series of international case studies, the authors highlight various challenges facing agricultural cooperatives in developing countries.

Jos Bijman briefly said something about cooperatives in general. Jur Schuurman took over and spoke about the achieved results and was followed by Kees Blokland (Agriterra’s Managing Director and one of the authors), who explained the contents of the campaign ‘Small farmers, big deal’. The campaign fits in well with the main purpose of LANDac: “The central focus is on mutual learning about optimising linkages between agricultural investments, inclusive and sustainable development, and food security.”

Editors Jur Schuurman and Jos Bijman handed the book to Theo de Jager, because, as chairman of the PAFO, he is the representative of millions of farmers on the African continent. Ultimately, the book is their reflection: after all, agricultural cooperatives belong to and are meant for farmers.
